The federal police in Passau said the man was arrested on October 4th in Champigny-sur-Marne and extradited this Friday. It is the thirteenth European arrest warrant against smugglers that has been executed this year.

The first indications of the smuggling gang have been around since May 2022, and an arrest warrant was issued in Passau against the Turkish citizen in the summer. The gang is said to have been involved in forty smuggling operations involving more than 100 migrants. The arrested man is said to have coordinated the smuggling into Germany via the Balkan route. Two other heads of the gang were arrested in July.

According to their spokesman Heinz Holub-Friedreich, the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office was informed by their German colleagues that there was a smuggler in Vienna who was said to have been responsible for several smuggling cases through Austria. Through further investigations, a bunker apartment in Vienna was discovered, where 19 people were found dragged. However, the smuggler was not caught at this point. He was just arrested in France.
