Nursing professionals have been trained in Rohrbach for 40 years. In 1983, today’s Rohrbach Health and Nursing School (GuKPS) started with just one class. Benefits for the trainees such as free literature, a relaxation room or free childcare, such as those available today, were not yet thought of. Now, in 2023, GuKPS Rohrbach is well networked in a school network with around 30 employees in Freistadt and Schärding, and 46 trainees are starting their nursing careers at the Rohrbach location alone this year. GuKPS Rohrbach has also changed significantly in terms of space over the last 40 years: While in 1983 classes were held in the ballroom of the Red Cross House, today there are nine classrooms (including three rooms for the training and transfer learning area) in the school’s own building in the immediate vicinity Rohrbach Hospital takes its place. The offer is supplemented by a modern simulation and debriefing room, separate break, rest and exercise rooms for the trainees, a library, a conference room for the teachers and office space for the school administration.

Digital nursing training
Of course, a lot has happened in the last 40 years on the training side. Classrooms and study groups are more diverse these days. Digitalization has rapidly found its way into nursing education. “We attach great importance to diversity in lesson design, topicality of teaching content, comprehensibility and individual knowledge transfer. A good mix of theory and practice is important,” explains Martina Bruckner, head of the OÖG schools. Karl Lehner from the OÖG management adds: “We already have one of the most modern training courses. But we always keep up with the times. We have just seen in the USA that it is quite possible that in a few years avatars will be used as training patients’ could be used.”

There are currently 100 trainees doing nursing training at GuKPS Rohrbach in training courses for nursing assistants, nursing assistants, specialist social care with a focus on work with the elderly: “Our trainees are between 17 and 54 years old. They come with a wide variety of previous knowledge and professional experience, but they all have one thing in common – you “Interest in nursing. Because of this diversity, there are exciting opportunities to benefit from each other,” explains Susanne Hauer, site manager of GuKPS Rohrbach: “Since we have been offering many training courses in a part-time version, we have been able to attract even more people interested in nursing.”
“As I was a student myself eleven years ago, I know how important high-quality training is as a basis for professional activities. I returned as a teacher about a year ago. I see myself as a companion and mentor,” says Doris Atzmüller from experience.
