On October 1, 1973, the time had come: for the first time, 120 residents in the state capital were supplied with food. The menu back then? Vegetable soup and baked meatloaf. The price was staggered, the lowest contribution was eleven shillings and the highest contribution was 30 shillings per month.
Today around 1,100 people use the service – either daily or on certain days of the week. The Samaritan Association and the Red Cross deliver an average of 166,000 portions of food every year. A portion currently costs 8.80 euros. Meals on Wheels is coordinated by the city of Linz, for the Dussmann Service has been responsible for putting together the dishes and logistics for almost 30 years.
“More than just food delivery”
“‘Meals on Wheels’ aims to help older and… People with mobility impairments can stay within their own four walls for as long as possible. This also relieves the burden on caring relatives,” says social officer Vice Mayor Karin Hörzing (SP). She emphasizes that the offer is much more than “just a meal delivery”: “The delivery people are always happy to take the time to say a few kind words and help, to maintain contact with the ‘outside world’.”

Vegetable soup and meat loaf are still on the menu today, but the variety of dishes has grown significantly over the past 50 years. The proportion of light food is currently around 25 percent, and that of vegetarian food is 15 percent (and the trend is rising).
North of the Danube, the Samaritan Association takes over the delivery, south of it the Red Cross. In detail, the Red Cross looked after 716 clients last year and the Workers’ Samaritan Association 418. Of the total 1,134 customers, around a third ordered daily. The majority, more than half, are over 80 years old. Further information about the service can be found here.
