They have been the strongest party for 20 years. According to the surveys, the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) is likely to gain around two points and get around 28 percent of the vote. There are also signs of a gain for the Social Democrats (SP), to around 18 percent. The Greens and the Green Liberals, who made massive gains four years ago, have to accept losses. Political scientists explain this with a greater need for stability in times of crisis.
Nothing is likely to change in terms of concentration government
The election result does not change the seven-member government (Federal Council). This is a concentration government that has been formed by the four largest parties for decades. In addition to the SVP and SP, these are the liberal FDP and the “Center” (formerly the Christian Democratic CVP). The seven Federal Councilors (ministers) are often in office for ten or more years and usually determine their own resignation.
Around 5.5 million eligible voters
As is usual in Switzerland, the last polling stations close at 12 noon. A good 5.5 million citizens are entitled to vote. Most of the time, more than 90 percent vote by mail. Both chambers of Parliament are elected, the National Council (200 members) and the Council of States (46 members), in which the cantons are represented.
