The United States alerted Uruguay for Russian actions against the elections

The government of USA alerted at least 26 countries, including Uruguay, for the actions of Russia to try to undermine legitimacy or influence in some way the elections between 2020 and 2022, through different actions.

According to an investigation by the intelligence services of United States, Russia tried to intervene in, at least, 11 elections from nine democratic countries; and attacked the validity of the elections of 17 other countries through social media campaigns whose objective was to amplify “domestic narratives.”

This was communicated from Washington to governments that were or could have been victims of the actions of the Kremlin; between them, Uruguay. The warning was through a diplomatic cable sent by the United States Department of Stateas reported by the EFE agency.

What did the United States say?

In the cable, US authorities report the increasing efforts of the Russian intelligence services to “globally undermine democratic processes” and influence election results through disinformation campaigns.

“Russia is carrying out operations to degrade the public trust in the integrity of the elections themselves,” the telegram explains.

Among the recipients of the diplomatic cable are Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Mexico in America; and Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom in Europe.

Senior officials of the State Department and the United States intelligence services pointed out two specific cases in South America and Europe.

“In one case in South America, Russian television channels Telegram “They included false news reports of alleged fraud and Russian trolls on social media platforms amplified concerns about post-election instability and violence,” the officials explained. Although the sources refused to identify the South American country affected, they did indicate that USA detected “web pages connected to Russian intelligence in protests against the election result.”

In the case of the European country, the US intelligence services detected web pages connected with Russia who distributed articles in English with accusations of electoral fraud.
