“It’s like a weight that falls off your shoulders. I want to cry, but not now,” Johann Zarco searched for the right words. The Frenchman needed 120 races in the MotoGP premier class of motorcycle world championships and many second places to finally be able to emerge as the winner last Saturday on Philipp Island in Australia. This was celebrated with a backflip.
After a dramatic last lap, the Ducati rider, who will be moving to Honda in 2024, prevailed 0.2 seconds ahead of his brand colleague Francesco Bagnaia. The Italian extended his World Championship lead to Jorge Martin. He started the final lap as the leader, but, as was the case recently in Indonesia, he made a mistake with his choice of tires (soft rear tires) and fell behind mercilessly. He had to make do with fifth place behind KTM rider Brad Binder. Instead of taking back the championship lead, he is now 27 points behind Bagnaia with four races to go. Local hero Jack Miller came seventh on a KTM and is now ninth in the World Championship, Binder is still in fourth place.
In the end, the decision before the weekend to bring the MotoGP Grand Prix forward to Saturday was absolutely right. Yesterday’s sprint over half the distance had to be canceled due to bad weather.
Early termination in Moto2
The Moto2 race had previously had to be stopped early due to strong wind and rain. However, the race was classified after only eight laps. The victory went to the Italian Tony Arbolino, who came a little closer in the overall ranking to the leader, young KTM star Pedro Acosta from Spain. In Moto3 the entire distance was ridden, in which the Turkish Deniz Öncü won on a KTM. The overall leader is the Spanish Honda driver Jaume Masia.
The next round will begin in Thailand next weekend.
