If something old doesn’t go away forever, but rather forms the basis of something new, then it’s understandable that this has a role model character. The approximately 300 guests at the official opening of the cultural event in the “Old Indoor Swimming Pool” in Gallneukirchen on Saturday rightly applauded the successful transformation of the indoor swimming pool, which was closed in 2013, and whose two pools now serve as a stage for cultural forms of play.
With “Unplugging”, the Malaria theater group contributed a performance to the opening act that sparked enthusiasm among the audience. With the oversized plug, the final transition from an indoor swimming pool to a cultural site was made visible and ultimately tangible.
“For me, this is a project that has succeeded very well in combining sustainability and careful use of resources,” said Gallneukirchen’s mayor Sepp Wall-Strasser at the opening of the “Room for All”. In addition, this project was developed with the participation of citizens for the benefit of the community, Wall-Strasser continued.
Obsolete after almost 40 years
As reported, the indoor swimming pool, which opened in 1975, was no longer of use in 2013. It was decommissioned with no prospect of continued use in this form. The desire for reuse, which was soon heard from the population, then became more concrete through the cultural development plan initiated by the municipality’s cultural committee six years ago. The aim was to use the large vacant spaces in Gallneukirchen, which were considered to be the old indoor swimming pool and the old fire department, as innovative cultural and event venues. The “Old Fire Department” has been in operation since summer 2022, and will now be followed by the “Old Indoor Swimming Pool”, which was officially handed over by the municipality to the Gusental Cultural Pool at the weekend, whose members offered a colorful opening program. Now it’s about filling the rooms with people.
For Domenik Riedl, managing director of the Kulturpool Gusentals, the opening was a “successful start to the new cultural bathing season lasting several years”.
The uniqueness of the place impressed Alberndorf’s mayor Martin Tanzer, who is chairman of the Sterngartl-Gusental leader region. At the opening, he wished that many different artists and initiatives would be given cultural scope in the future.
