If foreign wheat is currently milled in Austria, this product can be referred to as Austrian flour and therefore as Austrian bread and pastries. “The decisive factor for the designation of origin of these products is the place where they are milled – but the consumer wants to know where the raw material comes from. If you buy Austrian bread, then the raw material should also come from Austria,” says Chamber of Agriculture President Franz Waldenberger. From 2024, the AMA seal of quality will guarantee the origin of Austrian flour and bread.
But the grain market has come under increasing pressure since the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Russia continues to dominate the market, exporting 50 million tons of wheat at the cheapest prices to Africa and Asia, putting pressure on the EU, which is aiming for 37 million tons of wheat exports this year. “Ukraine also produces wheat and is pushing 22 million tons of wheat onto the saturated EU market. This is destroying the market and having a corresponding negative impact on prices,” says Waldenberger. “It’s good that we supported Ukraine, but now production prices are so high, the markets have crashed, and actually our farmers are paying the price.”
