From slide shows to weddings, from the weekly seniors’ meeting to the annual general meeting of a sports club – the Linz Volkshäuser are still well-used. In total, the city recorded around 240,000 visitors in 2022. The front runners were the Volkshäuser in Dornach-Auhof (1,331 events), Kandlheim (1,026 events) and Pichling (817 events). “Everyone in Linz goes to a Volkshaus once a year,” says real estate officer, city councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP). There are also many visitors from other communities. Catering establishments are rented in five Volkshausen, such as the Atrio in the Volkshaus Kleinmünchen, which has been run by the Sonnleitner family since 2015.
Costs: two million euros per year
Only in the Volkshaus Bindermichl no tenant could be found. This probably also has to do with the aging building. That’s why it’s at the top of the list of possible renovation projects. The technical systems and equipment in the people’s houses are currently being gradually renewed. All in all, the city of Linz invests around two million euros in the Volkshäuser every year, with income amounting to around 500,000 euros. With its 13 people’s houses, the city of Linz is, according to its own information, the leader in Austria.
