Bronze at the World Tour final: Nußbach is the third best team in the world

In the women’s fistball Bundesliga, there was hardly anything that came together at Union Schwingenschuh Nußbach this autumn: the Kremstal women only ended up in eighth place in the table and were therefore placed worse than ever since they were promoted to Austria’s top division in 2012. This means that the team from Coach Marco Salzberger was worried about staying in the relegation play-off for the first time in the spring.

Expectations were therefore rather subdued before the World Tour finale in Curitiba (Brazil). However, the team around captain Katharina Lackinger grew beyond itself in South America. After clear 3-0 victories over Novo Hamburgo and defending champions Sogipa Porto Alegre (both Bra), Nußbach only lost the third group game against Dennach (D), which was already meaningless for promotion.

In the semi-finals, the Salzberger team lost 3-1 to Duque de Caxais (Bra). “The Brazilian team found it a little easier to adapt to the conditions here in Curitiba on the uneven playing field,” says Salzberger. But Duque deserved to win. In the small final, the Kremstal team met Dennach again, won 3-2 in a grueling game with spectacular defensive actions and won bronze, their best result to date at the “World Cup for Club Teams”.

“We were all really excited for this medal today,” says captain Katharina Lackinger, “the crowning achievement was the call-up of our attacker Svenja Schröder to the All Star team.”

The title went to Schneverdingen (D), Austria’s autumn champion Seekirchen came in fifth place.
