Hope for Max: second research project supported thanks to donations

Thomas Wagner and his son Max

Little Max Wagner is still a cheerful little guy. He bravely endures the suffering that his rare disease – Alexander’s disease – imposes on him. A cure has not yet been found. OÖNachrichten readers know the fate of the Braunau Wagner family, who put all their hope into science and collect money for promising research. The OÖN readers also proved to be very generous, as Thomas Wagner gratefully reports – after the appeal for donations in August of this year, thousands of euros were donated, thus supporting a second research project. “We are endlessly grateful to the readers for wanting to make a difference for Max and other dwarves,” says Thomas Wagner.

Research promising

As reported, after the devastating diagnosis, Thomas and his wife Stephanie dealt intensively with the extremely rare neurological disease that leads to death within a few years. And gained hope. Because the research is promising: “We will continue to work on science and, in particular, hope that the mix of already approved drugs used in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in preclinical research has drastically increased the lifespan and the clinical picture in ALS mice “, can be tested in Alexander as quickly as possible. That could make a huge difference for many children and buy time because the drugs already exist, while gene therapy will take longer,” says Thomas Wagner. The family moved to the USA in the summer because there is the most promising medical support for Max there. The little boy will probably soon have a feeding tube, a big blow for the family, as Thomas Wagner reports. But the beautiful moments outweigh them: a few weeks ago he said mom and dad for the first time. He also likes to give high fives, says his father.
