Slovakia could be the second country in Europe to return to lockdown

The first Minister, Eduard Heger, said this Wednesday that it was necessary to act “immediately”. While deputies of the coalition that supports it, made up of four parties, have said that they evaluate a two to three week confinement.

“It is an unpopular measure, but absolutely unavoidable”, said the president, Zuzana Caputova, after visiting the University Hospital of Bratislava. Caputova said what she saw “was tragic, it was horrible.”

“The specialists are clear on this: it is necessary to restrict the mobility of people, we need a lockdown, unfortunately, is a measure that has to affect everyone“he added.

Slovakia reported last Friday a record 9,171 cases in 24 hours, surpassing the previous mark of 8,432, registered a few days earlier.

On the other hand, the Government imposed this Wednesday new restrictions against the unvaccinated, that they cannot enter businesses that sell non-essential products, including shopping malls. They also cannot attend public events and must be tested twice a week in order to go to work.

The country registered 161 more hospitalizations for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the current total to 3,182, above the 3,000-bed threshold considered critical by the Government, the Ministry of Health reported on Thursday.

The portfolio added that 82% of these new patients are unvaccinated people. Meanwhile, the vaccination rate in Slovakia stood at 45.3% this Thursday, one of the lowest in the EU, well below the 65% average across the block.
