It is the night before his coronation as King of Rome: Julius Caesar is murdered by his opponents at the foot of the Capitol. Marc Anton, his closest friend, now also fears for his life. The fact that Caesar’s murderers let him give the funeral speech is the latter’s downfall: the rhetorically talented man manages to turn the crowd against Caesar’s murderers and drive Rome into a civil war. This is what happened in Shakespear’s play “Julius Caesar”, which premieres on Saturday at the Linz Schauspielhaus – in Helmut Krausser’s version, which “turns the showdown into a farce,” says dramatist Martin Mader. The play is about “the consequences of a murder plot.”

Politics of empty words

For acting director and director Stephan Suschke, the play is “a political thriller that shows how empty words are used to make politics.” It’s about stabbings, “as they always happen in politics, with or without a knife.” Specific allusions to current events should be left out.

Momme Röhrbein’s reduced stage design will lead into the general’s private rooms, in which music by Joachim Werner will be sung – inspired by the poetry of Ingeborg Bachmann. As Caesar, Alexander Julian Meile shakes the foundations of a democracy, Christian Taubenheim plays his friend Marcus Antonius. (kasch)
