A motion from the SP, Greens and Neos to instead name Franz-Resl-Strasse and Kuhnstrasse after Wels’s ex-mayor and resistance fighter Franz Grüttner and Maria Stromberger, the “Angel of Auschwitz”, did not find a majority. Instead, additional plaques will probably be attached to the street signs that point out the namesake’s Nazi past.
SP, Greens and Neos argued that street names represent an honor that Resl and Richard Kuhn, as Nazi profiteers, do not deserve. VP and FP spoke out against it because the designations would be reminiscent of the lax approach in Austria at the time of the designations in the 60s and 70s.
