With a large demonstration on the Ringstrasse, among other places, the staff of private and municipal kindergartens as well as after-school care centers and school leisure care in Vienna drew attention to the precarious situation in their everyday lives on Tuesday. Many kindergartens therefore remained closed.
“We urgently need more time, more space, more money and more staff!” said the protest call from the GPA and Younion unions. According to the organizers, around 12,000 people came, the police spoke of up to 10,000. “Without us, no music”, “No more good aunts” or “State of affairs, dark circles under the eyes” could be read on some of the banners brought by those affected.
Without better framework conditions, the already acute staff shortage will worsen, the unions warned. According to Younion, which is responsible for municipal employees, there is a shortage of 600 teachers in the city’s kindergartens alone, and 1,200 in all Viennese institutions. One of the central demands was therefore: “Training offensive and no empty promises”. In addition, the “skilled worker-child ratio” needs to be improved. In recent years, those in power have “consistently” refused to “create acceptable working conditions,” said Karin Wilflingseder from the GPA. Postscript: The announcement by Chancellor Karl Nehammer (VP) that 4.5 billion euros would be made available for the expansion of childcare places is “not enough for us by a long shot”.
In Vienna there are a total of 17,000 employees at kindergartens and after-school care centers. The leisure educators from “Education at the Focus”, who provide leisure activities for 35,000 children at 142 public elementary schools, also took part in the protests.
