Rally fever is rampant on the left and right of the Danube in half of Upper Austria and beyond. For the first time, a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) will take place from October 26th to 29th in the border triangle of Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany. For Austria, 50 years after the Alpine journey in 1973, it is only the second time that the premier class of rallying will be on the domestic roads – meaning freight routes and state roads in the Inn and Mühlviertel. The new Central European Rally (CER) is part of an exclusive series of rallies that also includes the Monte Carlo, Safari and Acropolis Rally.
Three routes in Upper Austria
The Austrian part of the Central European Rally covers three routes in Upper Austria, each of which is covered twice. On Saturday these are the special stages “Schärdinger Innviertel” and “Mühltal”, on Sunday the special stage “Böhmerwald” starts in the town center of Julbach. Foreign cars have been whizzing through the countryside since Monday. The teams use the inspections, which must take place within the framework of the road traffic regulations, for the final fine-tuning.

OÖN on an exploration tour
OÖN local editor Thomas Fellhofer also went on a tour and drove through the Mühltal special stage with motorsport driver Alois Höller. With a length of almost 28 kilometers, this is considered the “pinning test” of the entire rally. “The largest fan zone in Austria is also set up in the finish area in Peilstein,” invites Christoph Wohlmuth from the Austrian OK team. But you can also experience the start up close in a fan zone in Oepping. Shortly before the finish, a specially made jump will bring additional action.

To get you in the mood, there will be live music and public viewing with “folkshilfe ft. WRC” in the Peilstein fan zone on Friday, before rocking out on the show stage with the “Burnout Granny’s” on Saturday during the rally break. 14 additional fan zones have been set up along the domestic special stages. Parking is available at all fan zones. If these are further away, shuttle buses and taxis transport visitors to the viewing point.

In any case, an earlier arrival is recommended in order to be there on time for the start of the special stages. Advance sales have already closed. Tickets for individual special stages (from 25 euros) are then available at the fan zone box offices. Children up to 16 years old can watch for free when accompanied by an adult.
3000 helpers on their feet
But not only spectators will follow the rally, but also more than 3,000 volunteers in Austria alone. Motorsport clubs, sports clubs, music groups and fire departments are involved and are responsible for organizing individual fan zones. Regional companies are also on board, supporting the rally by providing food for the many volunteers.
“This special stage will take its toll”
The stage in the Mühltal, which the best rally drivers in the world have to complete twice on Saturday, is called the “royal test”. The start is in Oepping, the home town of one of the most successful local motorsport athletes, Alois Höller. OÖN editor Thomas Fellhofer drove with the 44-time rallycross champion on an inspection drive of the special stage.
“Things get really busy right from the start,” says the experienced motorsport driver immediately after the first bend in Salaberg. “There’s not a single thing to freak out about.” In this respect, the special stage also lacks key points – in fact, it is a single key point. “You have to be fully concentrated from the beginning to the end and you can’t allow yourself to make any mistakes,” says Höller.
The “King’s Stage” will also be decisive for the race: “This special stage will demand its victims,” predicts Alois Höller, meaning one or two retirements. At the age of 66, the rallycrosser himself is still heavily involved in motorsport and only won his 44th title in this discipline this year.
