Boulders came loose
As the Bavarian reports on his social media channels, the accident occurred at the entrance to the material depot: a large boulder suddenly came loose from the wall when the 57-year-old wanted to get his rope from a niche. “What happened then was just a reflex not to fall,” reports the experienced alpinist in an Instagram post. “A little shocked,” he climbed back to the belt and only then noticed that the boulder had hit him on his left ankle. His climbing partner provided first aid.
Spectacular rescue operation
“It became clear pretty quickly that there would be no more climbing today and pretty quickly I could no longer put any weight on my foot thanks to the compression bandage,” says Huber. A descent through the exposed Mittagsloch climb was no longer an option, “even though it was difficult for me to accept that,” said Huber. The climber was flown out of the wall in a spectacular rescue operation by the Christoph 14 helicopter and the Marktschellenberg mountain rescue service and taken to the Traunstein hospital.

“Hopefully you won’t need us again so soon”
The doctors there cautiously gave the all-clear: the injuries were not too serious, says Huber. “Happiness and misfortune are often so close together,” wrote the father of three and thanked the emergency services. “We appreciate your thanks and even if we are happy to help, hopefully you won’t need us again anytime soon,” the mountain rescue service said.

Thomas and Alexander Huber became famous when they were just ten years old. The “Huberbuam” climbed through walls that no one had ever climbed through – sometimes without safety. Numerous speed climbs followed, documentaries captured the adventures on film.

Seven years ago, Huber survived a serious accident without any lasting damage: while abseiling on the Brendlberg in Bavaria, the then 50-year-old fell twelve meters almost without stopping. “I had 1,000 guardian angels,” he told his fans at the time.
