The confessed 43-year-old is said to have hoarded around 14,000 shipments, including 263 official documents, from June 2022 to April 2023 in his apartment, in his car and in a locker in the delivery base. He justified the crime with overwork, which would have led to alcohol consumption and also private problems.

The mail items were addressed to recipients in Seekirchen, Neumarkt, Eugendorf and Mattsee im Flachgau. This also included the 263 official documents such as RSa and RSb letters, which alone were the subject of the indictment. In this case he was considered a civil servant in the legal sense. “These are documents that are about something, for example a request to commit a sentence or an acknowledgment of paternity,” the presiding judge pointed out. An injured party missed a construction negotiation.

“I am feeling ashamed for that”

“I’m very sorry about the whole thing. I’m ashamed that I have to sit here,” said the accused remorsefully. The father of two children has been delivering mail in eastern Flachgau since 2011. When he was transferred to a more western region in the Seekirchen area at the beginning of 2022, the work overload increased, he described. “There were 40 to 50 boxes there when I came back from vacation. There were also another 15 boxes to be delivered.”

The defendant confronted his superiors with the problem, but was left alone to deal with the work pressure, said defense attorney Markus Kobler. The man “developed a certain neurosis” and increasingly took refuge in alcohol. The professional, psychological and family problems – the accused himself spoke of divorce – overwhelmed him. He was ultimately treated as an inpatient at his own request and also underwent alcohol therapy.

The jury assessed the confession, the previous cleanliness, the exceptional psychological situation and the professional overload as mitigating factors. “You asked for help but didn’t get it,” the judge stated. With a punishment range of six months to five years, “this is a very lenient sentence.” The man is still on sick leave. He wants to go back to work in November.
