Edeltraud Allerstorfer, director of the Bergheim vocational and technical school, is stunned. Unknown people stole around 300 kilograms of fruit from the garden of the Bergheim technical school that she runs. 30 old and very rare varieties grow in an orchard on the training facility’s property, which are cared for by the students throughout the year and harvested in the fall.

With car and trailer

The harvest was already well advanced in the past few weeks. When the last trees were to be harvested the previous week, the students discovered that someone had beaten them to it. Unknown people are believed to have driven to school in a car and trailer and loaded kilos of apples. According to the director, the fruit thieves left clear traces in the meadow.

“Disappointed and surprised”

“We were very surprised and disappointed that the work was taken away from us by unknown people,” writes Allerstorfer in a letter to the editor to the OÖN and speaks of a “bottomless impudence.” She says that everyone should know that orchards are not a common property.

The apples should have been processed into juice by first grade students. “Maybe someone meant well for us and wanted to save us the work and we get the finished juice. We’re looking forward to it!” says the headmistress cynically.
