In the 1950s, Molterer was part of the miracle team from his hometown around Toni Sailer and Ernst Hinterseer. He celebrated an unrivaled nine victories at the Hahnenkamm races to date. In 1956, Molterer won two Olympic medals in Cortina d’Ampezzo with silver in the giant slalom and downhill bronze, and he also won gold at the World Championships three times.
Molterer celebrated over 50 FIS race victories, but the risk-taking blonde was always denied gold at a major event. After his active skiing career ended, the “white lightning bolt from Kitz” lived in the USA for more than 60 years. Last year, after the death of his partner Kay, he returned home, where, according to the ÖSV, he fell asleep quietly and peacefully on Wednesday night. The ski association recognized Molterer as a great role model who will always be remembered with honor.
