The subsidiary of the Chinese Bytedance group said on Wednesday that 6,125 employees were busy “moderating” content in the EU. A new EU law against illegal content on the Internet recently requires major online platforms to produce regular “transparency reports” on their efforts.

The so-called Digital Services Act (DSA) came into force in August. Very large online providers face massive penalties if they do not take action against misinformation, hate messages and copyright infringements. Tiktok and 18 other platforms fall into this category because they have more than 45 million monthly users in the EU.

Tiktok says in its first report that it has launched a tool to allow European users to report illegal content in accordance with DSA obligations. In the first month, 35,000 reports were received for 24,000 videos. Action was taken against 16 percent of these videos.

According to the information, around a third of the 6,125 “content moderators” at Tiktok edit videos in English. German-speaking and French-speaking employees follow in second and third place. The team includes speakers of the EU’s official languages, as well as commonly spoken other languages such as Turkish and Arabic.

The online mail order company Amazon also published its first mandatory EU report on Wednesday. Accordingly, Germany is by far the largest market for the US group with 60.4 million active monthly users. Italy comes in second place with 38.1 million users.

The DSA rules particularly affect counterfeit products and false product reviews on Amazon. According to its own information, Amazon took action against 15,774 users in the first half of the year and received 8,863 inquiries from authorities – over half of them from Germany. Several middlemen were excluded from Amazon and six million counterfeit products were identified and confiscated in 2022.
