The driver involved in the accident, a 19-year-old Croatian probationary driver’s license holder from Wels, and his passenger, a 20-year-old from Wels, were traveling from Gunskirchen on the L1250. The 19-year-old drove off the right side of the road – apparently he was distracted because he was filming himself, as it later turned out. The accident car then left a trail of destruction. The car first hit a transformer tower and took with it a survey stone in the adjacent field as well as two traffic control posts and a danger sign (“Caution Children”). Then the vehicle and its occupants rolled over several times and came to a stop on its wheels near a hedge fence after colliding with a digital speed indicator (“You are driving…”). It narrowly missed a residential building.
The injured driver and his passenger were able to get out of the car independently. After initial medical treatment, both were taken to Wels Hospital.
Cell phone found with video of drunk driving
The police made a discovery that had serious consequences for the driver: the 19-year-old’s cell phone, which had been thought lost, turned up again. A video was stored on it that the driver had apparently recorded shortly before the accident – it shows him driving at extremely high speed, according to the police. An alcohol test carried out on the driver was positive.
The L1250 Bichlwimmer Straße was closed in the area of the accident site for around an hour. The material damage caused is enormous. The 19-year-old is reported.
