The general transport strike has been lifted and tomorrow there will be buses

The National Union of Transport Workers and Workers (Unott) lifted the general strike that had been decreed for tomorrow in the metropolitan area of Uruguay, after leading to “progress and agreements” in negotiations with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS).

This was also confirmed by the head of the MTSS, Pablo Mieres. The suspension of the force measure was achieved after the ministry agreed to create a commission to evaluate on a case-by-case basis the situation of the four workers dismissed for Central Agency, one of the points that had triggered the conflict and that had led to the continued strike despite the salary increase announced a week ago.

As reported by Unott through a statement, the agreements have to do with “agreeing on a payment formula of debts in the suburban sector” and “agree on the installation of a tripartite commission to resolve the refund of the four colleagues dismissed from the Central Agency company.”

This commission will be made up of the Unott, the interdepartmental, union workers, the company and the government; and its main function will be to determine whether the Central Agency workers should be fired or not.

The general strike covered urban transportation, taxis, suburban and interdepartmental transportation, and was scheduled for tomorrow, for a 24-hour extension.

The salary adjustment, a claim previously achieved

A week ago, the Executive power decreed a salary adjustment for suburban bus workers, one of the demands with which Unott justified the call for a general strike.

The situation of suburban transportation is delicate, not only due to the drop in ticket sales, but also in terms of workers’ salaries. That is why, a few days ago, Unott resolved a general transport strike for the next 27th, in a show of support for the salary claims of the suburban sector and with a mobilization towards Executive Tower included.

Faced with this situation, and to avoid transportation strikes, the Executive Branch signed a decree that establishes the correctives for a salary adjustment.

In any case, the strike measure had been maintained due to a complaint from the workers about a debt of Copsa that remains, four arbitrary dismissals in the Central Agency and the issue of the screen as a security element for taxi drivers, according to Underrayado.
