Based on a demo by John Lennon, whose voice was freed from all background noise thanks to modern AI technology, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr completed the track.
John Lennon recorded the song as a demo with vocals and piano in New York in the late 1970s. 14 years after his death in 1980, his wife Yoko Ono gave the recording along with two other songs to Paul, George and Ringo. These were released later, but not “Now And Then” because at the time it was not technically possible to separate Lennon’s vocals from the piano.
It wasn’t until decades later that director Peter Jackson achieved this for his documentary “The Beatles: Get Back”. McCartney and Starr finally completed the song last year; the guitar parts of Harrison, who died in 2001, come from the Beatles’ failed attempt to finish the song in 1995.
