He will not be granted an extended residence permit, the television station TV4 reported on Thursday, citing information from the immigration authority Migrationsverket. The authorities informed the broadcaster that he should be deported, but would still receive a temporary residence permit until mid-April 2024.
According to the information, the authorities’ decision is associated with a five-year ban on returning for the man, who comes from Iraq. He himself told the TT news agency and the radio station SVT, among others, that he would challenge the decision and not leave the country.
In recent months, copies of the Koran have repeatedly been set on fire or otherwise desecrated at public demonstrations in Sweden. Islam-critical Iraqis were responsible for most of the incidents. The actions had also led to angry reactions among Muslims abroad, and Sweden had incurred severe diplomatic anger. The Swedish police had investigated the man several times for possible sedition.
The exact reason for the expulsion remained unclear on Thursday. According to information from the radio station SVT, the man was questioned by the authorities in the summer about images from Iraq in which he is said to be seen, among other things, with weapons in a military environment. The man immigrated to Sweden in April 2021 and received a three-year residence permit at that time. According to an authority spokesman, he is said to have provided false information about his need for protection when applying for a residence permit.
