The Vienna University of Technology (TU) (84th place in computer science) and the Medical University of Vienna (95th place in medicine/health sciences) were each able to place themselves among the top 100 universities. In total there are ratings in eleven subject groups.
The University of Vienna ranked 41st in law, 45th in social sciences, 54th in psychology, 97th in educational sciences and 99th in life sciences/veterinary medicine. There were no top 100 places for Austrian universities in economics, engineering and natural sciences/mathematics.
The TU Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna have improved slightly compared to the previous year. For the University of Vienna, the humanities, law and educational sciences were in some cases quite strong, but there was a slight decline in the life sciences, psychology and social sciences.
Dominance of US universities
The rankings are still dominated by universities from the USA and Great Britain. They lead the rankings in all eleven categories. The universities of Harvard and Stanford are number one in three subject groups each, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in two.
A little further back, however, the dominance of Anglo-American universities is crumbling in some categories, the ranking makers state. Especially in the social sciences, educational sciences and economics, the top ten are significantly more diverse than they were a few years ago. In economics, for example, two Chinese universities have achieved a top ten place for the first time – five years ago only US and British universities were represented in the top ten places. Similar in the educational sciences: five years ago there were nine Anglo-American and one Hong Kong universities (these are evaluated separately, note) in the top ten. There is now also another Chinese university and a Canadian university there.
From continental Europe, only the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich achieved top ten positions. It comes in fifth place in computer science and ninth place in natural sciences/mathematics.
