Ten of 14 wild boar samples examined from wild boar from the Weilhartforst and Kobernwiederwald exceed the PFAS limit: This is the result of a study commissioned by the state veterinary service in the Braunau district at the beginning of September.
PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are industrial chemicals that have been used for decades in the manufacture of a variety of products. They are found in coatings on textiles, as waterproofing, in baking paper, fire extinguishers and so on. If people ingest PFAS, it can have health effects: increased cholesterol levels, toxic developmental effects in the unborn child, kidney and testicular cancer in adults or a reduced immune response to vaccinations.
In the neighboring district of Altötting in Bavaria, contamination with PFAS has been known for a long time – these are contaminated sites from the Gendorf chemical park. The use of some of these toxic substances has been banned due to their problematic environmental properties. At the beginning of 2018, blood donations from Altötting residents were no longer accepted; by then the toxic substances had already spread everywhere: in the soil, in the water and in the blood of many people.
Because wild boars dig
Wild boars are also likely to have ingested PFAS through the soil: they dig in the earth, eat small creatures living in the soil and are therefore contaminated, unlike other wild animals. Also in the Braunau district and in the neighboring districts of Ried and Vöcklabruck. The hunting managers have now received a recommendation to no longer market the wild boars as food or only after prior examination as food, according to information sent out today by the Braunau district administration.
The results from tests on free-range eggs, raw milk and fish that the Upper Austria food inspectorate carried out this year are more reassuring: They showed no complaints. The groundwater and drinking water have also been randomly examined since 2016. The measurement data collected on PFAS is well below the limit, the OÖNachrichten reported. The water quality continues to be examined on an ongoing basis, it said.
