Forest mountains high above Weyer

The area here, near the border with Lower Austria and Styria, was settled around the year 1000. From the 14th century onwards, the iron industry led to a significant boom in the region, which can still be seen in some historic buildings. Forest, forest, nothing but forest, could be the motto of this tour. And it fits perfectly with the OÖN series on the forest theme. Between the valley towns, extensive forests dominate the scenery.

We set out on a circular hike and explored the peaks of Rapoldeck and Schrabachauer Kogel on lonely paths. From the market square in Weyer, follow the signs to Rapoldeck first up to the parish church and continue on asphalt past a farm to a rest area at the edge of the forest. Here the diversity in the forest is evoked, along the way you will find signs on the respective tree species. Out of the forest you pass two more houses, then from the Pöller intersection you go uphill on Gratweg No. 84. The Sepp Larch Panorama Trail No. E21, which branches off to the right, will be our return route on this round. It continues steeply in places. Kniebeißer or Pensionistensteig is written on a board, and you can choose between the direct path or the path that is defused with a bend. But both soon reunite. Two forest roads are crossed, on the last there is a chapel with a rest area. Then, climbing along the forest ridge, you reach the first peak, the Rapoldeck. Table, bench, summit cross and a view between the trees invite you to take a break.

On the Schrabachauer Kogel

We continue following the ridge, in a beautiful clearing with blooming autumn crocuses and thistles we reach the beginning of the summit climb to the Schrabachauer Kogel. After about 15 minutes you reach the rocky summit structure with a summit book and beautiful views. Back at the junction, follow the signpost for the Sepp Larch Panorama Trail – which is reminiscent of the alpinist from Weyer. Along the edge of the forest you reach a forest road.

Attention: You have to be careful here! There is a small hunting lodge on the left. Directly below this, at a forest path that soon ends, you will find a large Stoamandl. A path begins here, which is clearly visible but somewhat overgrown in places and leads downhill to a high seat. Here you turn left onto a wide forest road. On this downward path, after about a kilometer you will come to an intersection with signs. A forest path leads partly steeply downwards and joins a forest road again, on which you continue to the Loibner Wiese. Keep heading north and you will eventually reach a signposted mountain bike route at an intersection. Here, follow the signs for a moment to the left, then the Sepp Larch panoramic path branches off for the last time, and you almost immediately reach the Pöller intersection again, where the circle closes. On the way down to Weyer you have the opportunity to get fresh eggs at the Eckerbauer organic farm.

• starting point: Public arrival by train to Weyer train station or with the OÖVV buses. There are parking spaces near the train station and at the church.

• Characteristic: Beautiful mountain hike on paths and forest roads mostly marked with numbers 84 and E21. You should be sure-footed on the Schrabachauer Kogel in the last section near the rocky ridge. When descending the Sepp Larch Panorama Trail, good orientation is necessary to find your way. It is a narrow path that begins below the small hunting lodge near a large Stoamandl. There is no signage here. You follow this downwards to a wide forest road.
  It’s best to use our GPX track as a guide. If you are unsure, you can do so again Ascent path over the Rapoldeck into the valley consequences. Good fitness is necessary because of the altitude difference.

On the side of the road

Stop: For a stop after the tour, we recommend the Gasthaus Berger on Hollensteiner Straße. An inviting garden, a cozy dining room, down-to-earth food with high-quality products and fine drinks leave nothing to be desired. The house dog with the friendly name Alois greets the numerous regular guests with a wagging tail. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (Internet: binbanberger.at).

If you’re in the mood for sweets or small snacks, you’re in good hands at the Hohlrieder café-confectionery-bakery on the market square.
