After the end of the public vote, it is half time for the 49th election for Upper Austria’s Athletes of the Year. When it came to the clicks, water ski queen Nicola Kuhn, triathlete Georg Enzenberger and the track and field athletes from the TGW Decathlon Union set the pace. This means you have the biggest lead in the final jury vote (see mode below).
What at first glance looks like three very different leaders, but upon closer inspection is – if you will – a “triple victory” of one individual: Enzenberger is, on the one hand, a member of the decathlon union and, on the other hand, in a relationship with Kuhn. “We made sure that we really gave it our all together,” says the Eferdinger, speaking of a “nice interim success”.

It is therefore understandable that the 29-year-old received the most clicks across all categories. It almost became a “triple victory” for the decathlon union, as Susanne Gogl-Walli “sprinted” to the promising second intermediate place behind Kuhn. “It was very important to our club that we do well this year,” says the 400-meter runner, who, thanks to her semi-final appearances at the European Championships, World Championships and the Olympics, also has the right chances in the jury voting.
Polcanova not in the final
In the men’s race, Enzenberger paracyclist Wolfgang Steinbichler (2nd) and, above all, defending champion and Kitzbühel winner Vincent Kriechmayr (3rd) are hot on their heels. Motorsport driver Thomas Preining (6th) once again made a big splash with his DTM title. While last year’s winners of the Oberbank Steelvolleys Linz-Steg (2nd) are once again at the forefront of the teams, defending champion Sofia Polcanova (11th) is out of the race for the women. An indication of the balance in the women’s field, which includes Andrea Mayr (7th), the reigning mountain running world champion. Enzenberger: “I’m very excited to see how the jury will evaluate the successes from the very different sports.”
49th OÖN athlete election: This is how it continues
After the audience evaluation, a jury of experts with experts from Sportland, the umbrella and professional associations, the media as well as the experts Christoph Etzlstorfer, Theresia Kiesl, Andreas Goldberger and Hannes Trinkl vote on the ranking of the top ten. The fan vote is included in the final result and is counted as two jury votes. All winners will be recognized at the big ceremony on Thursday, November 2nd at the Linzer Palais Kaufmännischer Verein. The “Golden Leo”, a special award from the OÖN for special achievements and merits in the field of sport, is also awarded there. The final result will be announced in the OÖN edition on November 3rd.
