If SV Zebau Bad Ischl grits its teeth against St. Martin am Mühlviertler Granit today, it would be manageable. Although the Ischlers need every point as second to last in the Upper Austria League, they have already achieved the most important success of this year. After years of tug-of-war, the Ischl local council has now given the green light for the renovation of the football field.
As reported, the state government, which would support the project financially, was already pushing for the “urgently necessary construction measures” to be implemented. The state agreed to cover 50 percent of the costs of 960,000 euros. However, only if the municipality contributes at least 17 percent from its own resources. Before 2018 (“New Municipal Financing Act”), the municipal share would have been 25 percent.
“See it as an advance payment”
Mayor Ines Schiller (SP) was prepared to contribute this 25 percent, but was repeatedly criticized for this by the Zukunft Ischl list. Vice Mayor Hannes Mathes wanted to increase the amount to 33 percent in order to relieve the club’s financial burden.
Sports City Councilor Marija Gavric finally delivered the long-awaited compromise. According to this, the municipality will actually contribute 33 percent of the costs for the renovation, but the annual subsidies for SV Zebau Bad Ischl will be canceled over the next five years. “We see the increase to 33 percent as an advance payment of subsidies. The club will only receive youth funding. We all want the pitch to be rebuilt, but we have found it very difficult because such a high proportion is an injustice to the other clubs opposite,” says Schiller.
The state of Upper Austria is now contributing 480,000 euros, the city will contribute around 317,000 euros, and the association itself is contributing the rest (around 163,000 euros). The Zukunft Ischl list welcomed the decision, saying the club deserved that the city now “clear the way”.
An expensive Christmas miracle
There is still material for heated discussions in Bad Ischl: In 2020, the city decided to apply for the Ö3 Christmas Miracle, a fundraising campaign to benefit Licht ins Dunkel. Bad Ischl also received the contract for this December and expected a sum of around 80,000 euros. Now, in the “worst case,” as Mayor Schiller says, the city could face around 285,000 euros in costs. “Because the Christmas miracle takes place in the spa park, we need the appropriate electricity output and a complete reconstruction of the lawn,” she says.
The tourism association will cover 100,000 euros, but there is still 180,000 euros left. “But all employee hours and the costs for security are taken into account, which we will still minimize,” says Schiller. The cost increase was sharply criticized in the local council on Wednesday, but ultimately the Christmas miracle was passed with a narrow majority.
