When it comes to sexually transmitted diseases, there was a negative record in Europe in 2019 with 17 million reports. From 2010 to 2019, syphilis diagnoses among 15- to 49-year-olds increased by 87 percent. In addition, almost twice as many new HIV cases were detected than in previous decades, with around 1.5 million people currently affected in Europe.

This trend can also be observed in Austria. In this country, high levels of gonorrhea and chlamydia infections are particularly noticeable, according to Georg Stary and Katja Knapp from the University Clinic for Dermatology at MedUni Vienna. The two doctors are also contributing to a series of articles on the subject in the journal “The Lancet Regional Health”.

Scientists see the reasons for this development as an increase in high-risk behavior during sexual contacts, which in particular includes unprotected sexual intercourse with changing partners. Since the HIV virus and AIDS have lost some of their horror thanks to “HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis” (a drug that is intended to protect against infection with HIV), many people also do without condoms. And as a result, other sexually transmitted diseases are also becoming increasingly widespread again.
