Two thirds of all girls and boys in Austria receive an average of 41 euros in pocket money per month. Almost a third of parents attach conditions to the financial subsidy, according to the results of a survey by the online platform durchblicker.at in the run-up to World Savings Day. In 2020, only one in two people said they gave children up to the age of 18 pocket money of an average of 33 euros per month. But not everyone can still afford the expenses in times of rising prices.

One in ten parents stated in the survey that they had reduced or even eliminated their pocket money. Saving remains an important issue for everyone involved: the majority of children (85 percent) put some of their pocket money aside. The same number of parents provide financially for their offspring. But inflation has also caused a change in behavior here: a quarter are putting aside less than before due to the increased prices.

The majority receive cash

According to the survey, six to ten year olds receive an average of 20 euros in pocket money per month, boys and girls between eleven and 15 years receive 50 euros and 16 to 18 year olds receive around 86 euros. For three out of ten children, the grants are linked to good grades, housework or tidying up the room. Almost all children and young people are allowed to decide for themselves how the money is ultimately spent. However, 40 percent of parents make suggestions. The main items purchased are games and books (57 percent), followed by food, drink and sweets (42 percent) and leisure activities (38 percent).

The vast majority give their children their pocket money in cash, and a little more than a third transfer it to their child’s account. 41 percent of the children and young people surveyed already actively use an ATM card.

The market research institute respondi surveyed 1,029 people who live in Austria and have children under 18 on behalf of Durchblicker in October. The results are representative of the adult population.
