“I also don’t understand who is interested in ski races in October and why we ski on glaciers without snow. I hope that the ÖSV is open to moving it back,” said Johan Eliasch in an ORF report. The FIS boss, who was not in Sölden because of a private matter, was surprised with his statement. The FIS has always had the final say in calendar design. “We are and have always been willing to talk and will find a good solution together with the FIS,” said General Secretary Christian Scherer diplomatically. One could certainly imagine holding the World Cup opener two weeks later in the future.

ÖSV President Roswitha Stadlober made a similar statement. “Everyone belongs at the same table, we have never closed ourselves off. The organizing committee belongs there, we, the FIS, then we will decide together what the best solution is.”

The start of the season on the Rettenbach Glacier is accompanied by a major climate debate, with many calling for a later start to the season. The calendar has been adjusted, but it doesn’t seem to be enough, said FIS Secretary General Michel Vion on Friday. “We will adjust the opening again.”

At the same time, Vion noted that if the race started in December there would only be 30 or 32 races per gender instead of 45 this year. This may also affect classics like Kitzbühel and Wengen. “If we change something, we have to change everything. If we move forward two or three weeks, that will have consequences,” said Vion.
