Organizers of demonstration against Netanyahu denounce threats from the Police to break it up

The organizers of a demonstration to demand the resignation of the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the return of the kidnapped people scheduled for today in Haifa denounced threats of dissolution by the Israeli Police.

A spokesperson for the Haifa Popular Protest movement, Gali Eshet-Bazak, revealed that she had received a phone call from a Haifa police official who claimed to speak on behalf of the Coastal District.

“He told me that if the event is held the Police will intervene to dissolve it,” explained Eshet-Bazak, reported by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and replied by the Europa Press news agency.

The representative of the organization clarified that the police officer had not responded to her question about by what authority the demonstration was prohibited.

“I told him that the central event would be the lighting of candles in memory of the fallen and a demonstration in favor of the hostages,” Eshet-Bazak said, adding: “He replied that ‘When you say it will be the central event, it means that there will be other things aside. I tell you that we will disperse.'”

The Police officially communicated that “the right to protest is a pillar of a democratic state.”

“During the state of war, any type of protest will be allowed in accordance with the Law, complying with the conditions of the Police and, obviously, complying with the meeting conditions set by the Interior Central Command,” argued a police spokesperson.

Yesterday, the security forces had already announced that a similar demonstration called for this Saturday next to Netanyahu’s residence in Caesarea would not be allowed. However, this morning the Police denied this position.
