The Professional Association of Architects, Designers and Urban Planners of Uruguay published a statement questioning the project of the Municipality of Montevideo.

Apaddu published a statement on its social networks expressing its “total and absolute disagreement” with the bike path on July 18. In that sense, they assure that “basic concepts of urban planning and mobility” are being overlooked. First of all, they stressed that he would lose a “symbolic value” of an urban space and what “represents collective memory” since it is the main axis of the capital.
On the other hand, they assure that “the necessary conditions for security for circulation along the median axis of the lanes of vehicles with bicycles in a width that does not take into account drop areas, safety strips, where and how to turn, how the parallel traffic that will continue its reality as before will affect the cyclist.
In addition, they stressed that the businesses that give life to the avenue will be harmed, “further complicating circulation and expelling those who do not feel safe when moving.” From the association, they called the councilors to reevaluate the project since it is a cycle path that “it will end up being underused and dangerous.”
What is the project?
Cosse announced in mid-September the construction of the bike path, which will have an extension of 3.5 kilometers and will connect the Obelisk with the Independence Square, within the framework of a proposal that also includes the promotion of Greener Montevideo stamp for those businesses that include bicycle racks and favor users who choose to travel this way.
The cycle path will have a different width in Center and Cord and will be painted in the center of the avenue and against the north curb in Saint Joseph. Furthermore, since the Montevideo Municipality They stated that 600 bicycles circulate every day in the afternoons on the avenue, almost double the number of other streets.
Regarding the route, the I.M. He pointed out that the bike path will go July 18 until Jaguar, to wander down the street Saint Joseph, round trip, while it will arrive by Saint Joseph to the Independence Square.
