Third attack on the Israel flag in Linz

The flag that was raised in solidarity with the victims of the Hamas massacre on October 7th in front of the Old Town Hall on Linz’s main square. The latest incident occurred Sunday morning.

At around six o’clock the porter of the town hall set about raising the flag, as it will now be taken down overnight due to the incidents. He was probably observed by two students coming from the old town. The two 20-year-olds insulted the doorman and said they didn’t want to see the flag hanging. After the porter had hoisted it anyway and was back in the town hall, the two tore the flag down. A police patrol that happened to be passing by caught the students in the act. The two Austrians did not deny the crime and confirmed their statements to the officials. She is being investigated for denigrating foreign symbols. The two were not officially known and the police were not yet able to provide any information about any political background to the crime. The flag was immediately raised again.

Sunday’s incident is now the third attack on the Israel flag in front of the town hall. On the night of October 12th, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old Syrian cut up the flag, and both were quickly located. The second attack occurred on October 22nd in the evening. The flag was torn down by a 14-year-old and other perpetrators trampled on it. In addition to the 14-year-old, who comes from Syria, the police were also able to trace a 15-year-old.

City politicians, especially Mayor Klaus Luger (SP), condemned the attacks “in the strongest terms.” The city “resolutely opposes all forms of violence, exclusion and the denigration of state or religious symbols.”
