It was an extraordinary rescue operation for the Obertraun mountain rescue service and the staff of the Dachstein-Krippenstein railway: At around 2 p.m. the railway was at a standstill on the third section to the Gjaid station. “It was an automatic switch-off, which was probably triggered by a technical defect. We are currently assuming that it was switched incorrectly because the wind wasn’t very strong today. We will definitely investigate the error,” says Rupert Schiefer, managing director of the mountain railways, in conversation with the OÖN.
Passengers remained uninjured
At the time of the shutdown, 27 people were in the two gondolas of the cable car, which were evacuated thanks to the rapid deployment of the staff. The rescue operation lasted about two hours and the all-clear was given shortly before 4 p.m. “The car attendants all abseiled the people down safely; everything needed for this was in the gondolas anyway. The passengers were then safely brought down to the valley in collaboration with the mountain rescue service; fortunately no one was injured,” says Schiefer. “Our staff here is well trained and exercises are regularly carried out for such an emergency.”
The cause of the problem will be investigated tomorrow, Monday. Nevertheless, rail operations will continue as planned tomorrow, confirmed Schiefer.
