The UN estimates that 9 million people need food aid in northern Ethiopia

“More than 80% (7.8 million) of the people in need of help in northern Ethiopia are far from the front line,” the WFP added in a statement, quoted by the AFP news agency.

This week food aid arrived in the cities of Dese and Kombolcha, 400 kilometers from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, for the first time since they were occupied by TPLF rebels a month ago.

Ethiopia has been the scene of an internal conflict for a year, when the Government sent the army to dismiss the dissident authorities of the TPLF in Tigré, in the north of the country, a region controlled by this rebel group considered “terrorist” by the Government. federal.

Despite Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed proclaiming his victory in late November 2020, since June this year the Tigré rebels have advanced beyond this region and seized a city just 200 kilometers from the Ethiopian capital.

Abiy, a 45-year-old former soldier, marched to the front lines to lead the army in the war against the rebels, while Demeke Mekonnen Hassen, Deputy Prime Minister and Chancellor, will take care of routine government affairs during his absence.

In addition, the government, which declared a state of emergency at the beginning of November, yesterday imposed a decree with new restrictions on the dissemination of information on the course of the war.

For his part, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, this week called for an “unconditional and immediate” ceasefire in the African country.

This organization had already announced that it will evacuate before November 25 the families of its international employees in Ethiopia.

In this context, the United States, France and the United Kingdom, among others, also asked their citizens to leave the country.
