This was announced by a railway division manager to Indian media. The accident occurred in Vizianagaram in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. According to information from the division manager in the “Times of India”, a train hit a stationary train and four carriages derailed.
Several rescue teams and residents tried to rescue injured passengers from the wreckage. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered further relief measures. India’s East Coast Railway (ECoR) said human error and signal overshooting could have led to the collision, according to the Times of India.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office wrote on Sunday evening on the online platform X, formerly Twitter, that Modi had spoken to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to get an overview. Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
Train accidents are common in India. Just last June, one of the country’s worst train accidents occurred in the Indian state of Odisha: almost 300 people died and more than 1,000 were injured. Many trains are old and some tracks are in need of overhaul. The Indian government recently invested a lot in improving the railways, including in express trains.
