The Port of Montevideo is approaching a third record year of movements

For the third consecutive year the Port of Montevideo It will have record movements estimated at 1,100,000 Teu by the end of this year, although, until now, 909,869 could be registered; of that total, 40% from exports and imports and the other 60% from transits and transshipments.

Between the period from January 1 to the 26th of this month, in 2022, 880,413 Teus had been moved, while in 2021 there were 809,010 Teus loaded or unloaded, more than 100,000 units less than this year, which has a total of 909,869. Teus, according to the president of the National Port Administration (ANP), Juan Curbeloto El País.

The most important reasons for the growth of movement, according to the president of the ANP, were, first of all, the containerized cargo that comes to Uruguay by Waterway; the goods Brazilian, Paraguayan and southern Argentineas well as the improvement in infrastructure in the terminal specialized in containers Plata Basin.

Of the total movement – ​​which they indicate will exceed one million, reaching a total of 1,100,000 Teus – 40% correspond to imports and exports while the remaining 60% is made up of transits and transhipments. With this, Curbelo assured that the objective of positioning the Port of Montevideo as a hub terminal and as a reference place in South America.

The keys to your growth

In addition to those previously mentioned, the hierarchy of the ANP He highlighted that another of the factors that helped the port’s growth were the collapses they suffered since Brazil, which forces shipping companies to require the services of the Uruguayan port.

On the other hand, he highlighted that the ANP carries out a favorable commercial policy for the growth of the port and that it promotes infrastructure works, which generates an improvement in services. In that sense, Curbelo highlighted the good services offered by the Uruguayan port community as another growth factor.

The improvements coming to the port

There are three projects that promise to increase the movement of the Port of Montevideo. The first is the Central Railway project, which promises to be a “relevant infrastructure project for the multimodal transport system and the most important for the railway mode in recent years”, and which Its priority goal is to transport pulp from the new UPM 2 plant to the port of Montevideo for export.

On the other hand, there is the fact that a Uruguayan delegation, made up of authorities from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) and National Port Administration (ANP) offered Brazilian industrialists from Fiergs-RS – one of the main centers of industry in the State of South Rio Grande – the possibility of exporting through the Port of Montevideo.

Finally, the Rivera Dry Port project, made up of 25 hectares very close to the Port of Montevideo, will allow the development of a customs port facility that will be very important for capture cargo from the north of the regionand in particular from southern Brazilto be operated by the port of Montevideo.
