Investigations into numerous kidnappings have all led to one place: the cattle market in the small town of Umunneochi in the southeastern state of Abia, said the state’s governor, Alex Otti, on Monday night.
The marketplace is a transshipment point for ransom money from kidnappings as well as arms and drug trafficking. Authorities discovered dozens of bodies within 48 hours, including children, Otti said at a news conference. Some were beheaded. According to the governor, decomposed bodies as well as skeletons were discovered that had apparently been buried long ago. The perpetrators are being searched for, but there is no concrete information. It is suspected that the bodies were kidnap victims whose families could not afford the ransom, said Otti.
In Nigeria, criminal gangs often kidnap people for ransom. The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram is particularly active in the northeast of Africa’s most populous country with 220 million inhabitants, while criminal gangs carry out attacks and kidnappings in other parts of Nigeria.
