Mysterious events, nocturnal apparitions and mysterious figures of light – there are also said to be some haunted places in Upper Austria around which legends and legends are entwined. In these seven traditional (fairy tale?) stories, not everything goes well:

1. “White Woman” in Walchen Castle

According to legend, Dorothea Juliana von Gurland still haunts Walchen Castle (Vöcklabruck district) as a “white woman” to this day. The Count Gurland family died within a short time in 1736, probably due to a plague or cholera epidemic. It is said that the countess went “crazy” out of pain over the loss of her family. Her face behind the unlit windows of the castle heralds bad luck, they say.

2. Haunted Eggendorf Castle

A mysterious white woman is also said to be up to mischief in Eggendorf Castle in the Linz-Land district. An incident is recorded at a family celebration of the castle owners: At midnight the chapel bell suddenly started ringing like crazy. The lights in the castle suddenly brightened and frightened the 50 guests.

3. Ghost in Tollet Castle

A farmer’s son was accused by a farmhand of stealing a silver spoon in Tollet Castle (Grieskirchen district). He protested his innocence, but was sentenced to death. His last request was to be hanged on the gallows so that he could see his parents’ house. After some time the servant married. He received permission from the Count of Tollet to take a tree to make a cradle. But when the tree was felled, the allegedly stolen spoon was found in a nest. As a memorial, a cross column was erected at the place of execution, which still stands today. In Tollet Castle, the ghost of the farmer’s son is said to haunt the room to the east of the chapel.

5. Ghost room in Mondsee

Next to the north tower of the Mondsee Church there is the large window of the “Ghost Room” above the entrance to the Mondseeland Museum. This room is said to be haunted. A former lord of the castle wanted to see for himself and decided to spend a night in the room. As soon as he was in bed there was a huge noise, the table was moved, the armchairs banged against each other, windows and glasses rattled. The “Ghost Room” now serves as an exhibition space.

6. Flying bricks

The window of the tower of Wildberg Castle in Haselgraben, where the German King Wenceslas the Lazy (1361 -1419) was imprisoned, cannot be walled up. As the legend goes, the bricks laid in during the day are thrown out again at night.

7. Rolling ball

At Altpernstein Castle in Micheldorf there was an iron ball that from time to time rolled around like crazy in the attic without being able to stop it. According to another tradition, it was in the armory and rolled into the hay when you picked it up. Knights are said to have once played bowling with the ball.
