These were all samples evaluated by a long-time employee of Innsbruck pathology over the past year and a half. The suspicion arose during a follow-up inspection, wrote the “Tiroler Tageszeitung” (Tuesday edition). Eight misclassified cases have already been discovered.

As far as is known, according to Innpath managing director Milan Pos, no cancers were overlooked. Nevertheless, the eight cases are “not encouraging” and a “relevant number,” Pos told “TT”. Innpath is the pathology department of the Tyrol kliniken state hospital association. The eight cases were found during the follow-up check of 9,000 of the 10,000 samples to be examined. A follow-up check of the remaining 1,000 samples was still pending.

In the case of positive results, a four-eye principle applies; in the case of negative results, a new follow-up check is planned for at least ten percent of the pre-screened cases that are classified as normal. The employee concerned had apparently not taken the latter into account. The affected women’s gynecologists were informed immediately. “Thank God the feedback so far has shown no negative consequences or no evidence of cancer,” Pos was quoted as saying.
