Premature babies are children who are born before the 37th week of pregnancy. In Austria there are between 6,000 and 6,500 children every year. What is particularly dangerous is that the lungs of “premature babies” are not yet fully developed. “Due to the immaturity of the lungs of premature babies, the so-called respiratory distress syndrome develops,” said past president Ernst Eber at the 47th annual meeting of the Austrian Society for Pulmonology in Graz. Intensive therapies are then necessary immediately.
As a result, a chronic lung disease called bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) can develop, which leads to a variety of impairments: It restricts lung function and makes children susceptible to respiratory diseases. According to studies, there is also a clear connection between birth age and birth weight with the occurrence of asthma. “The lung function curves from early childhood to old adulthood demonstrate the lack of catch-up growth; this means that reduced lung function in childhood due to prematurity or severe asthma is associated with a significantly increased risk of COPD,” says Eber.
That is why premature babies in childhood must be closely cared for by specialized pediatricians. You also have to pay attention to lung health later in life. You shouldn’t trivialize respiratory problems, but you should see a pulmonologist soon. Furthermore, avoiding harmful environmental pollution and not smoking for life are strongly recommended for this group of people.
