Due to the mating season already underway, the spider species is currently increasingly getting lost in gardens, garages or houses. The males are currently looking for a partner and are therefore wandering around a lot and also going into buildings or gardens. “The females are also on the move, but in search of winter quarters. They build these as living burrows in sandy soil,” the broadcast emphasized. In search of suitable quarters, the animals then wandered into “human dwellings”.
The South Russian tarantula grows up to four centimeters long and has been found in Austria for around 100 years – from the Hungarian border in Burgenland via Vienna to the Czech border in Weinviertel in Lower Austria. As a habitat, it prefers sandy soils with little vegetation and a high ambient temperature.
If the spider species is found in the house, the nature conservation association asks that you put the animals in a glass or similar container and bring them back outside. Sightings can also be uploaded via the platform and app naturObservation.at in order to have them confirmed by experts. “By sharing their observations, those reporting become amateur researchers – so-called ‘citizen scientists’ – and provide valuable information as a data basis for scientific analyses,” it said.
