The BCU released the Monthly Indicator of Economic Activity (IMAE)

The IMAE summarizes the activity of the different branches of the economy in a given month, measured at constant 2016 prices, and presents an interannual variation that provides a measure of the evolution of the economic activity of the country in the short term.

The calculation of the IMAE is based on multiple supply indicators that are weighted by the participation of economic activities within the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The BCU will publish the IMAE on the last business day of each month, with a lag of 60 days. The IMAE series estimated since January 2016 is presented both in original figures and seasonally adjusted and in cycle trend.

The IMAE series are reviewed on the occasion of the quarterly and annual national accounts reviews, in line with the publication policy established by the BCU.

From the Central, they assure that the IMAE will allow academia, private sector analysts and policy makers, “to have a timely and reliable high frequency indicator”, which reflects the evolution of the economic activity.

Likewise, they point out that “the indicator represents an extension that complements the quarterly GDP estimates for the analysis of the situation.”

The methodology for compiling the IMAE (based on 2016) was developed by the Economic Statistics Area of the state body.
