The fact that some young recruits fail to stand at attention for long periods of time when they are sworn in and fall over is not new. But the fact that almost 100 recruits have to receive medical care has never happened before. “Of the 950 soldiers to be sworn in, 98 had to leave the military division because of circulatory problems; one soldier was seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital,” said Federal Army spokesman Michael Bauer to the Vienna weekly newspaper “Falter”. The young man is said to have broken his jaw in the fall.
No sitting swearing-in
The 950 soldiers had to stand at attention for about two hours. The army spokesman does not have an explanation for the large number of cancellations during the swearing-in ceremony. The weather was actually comparatively cool that day. However, it is not an option for the army that soldiers will be sworn in while sitting in the future: “Exercise is not an end in itself, but important training, especially for training self-discipline, which is absolutely necessary for a soldier,” says Bauer.
Upon request, the Federal Army emphasizes that the recruits are prepared for long periods of standing before they are sworn in and are required to eat and drink enough beforehand.
