After two years in office, Vöcklabruck’s mayor Peter Schobesberger (SPÖ) took stock yesterday at a press conference. “After taking office, I was overwhelmed by the variety of tasks”he says. “From the care key in a retirement home to a pothole on a side street, you are suddenly responsible for everything. And you are closer to people than in any other profession. That gives me joy – even if you sometimes come across fates that make you think.”

Child care is a priority

Schobesberger only has words of praise for the 253 employees of the town hall. But he also pays respect to his political competitors: “There is a good atmosphere for discussion in Vöcklabruck, even if we sometimes have different opinions”he says. “But when it comes to important issues, we pull together in the interests of our city.”

Schobesberger declares this to be his primary goal “seamless expansion” of childcare offers. “Regardless of whether it is about equal rights between women and men or the successful integration of people with foreign roots: the full expansion of childcare is the key to this”, he explains. In the past two years, 46 new kindergarten places have been created at the Pfarrhofgries, and the new kindergarten is also open in the afternoon.

Schobesberger has announced that the Franciscan Sisters will be setting up new play areas for the next two years. This year, the city also offered child care for school children during the fall break for the first time this year.

The mayor sees a need for six million euros in investment in the coming years to expand childcare. “We have already set aside two million in reserves for this area”says Schobesberger. “I am optimistic that we can manage the rest.”

The ÖVP is also committed to expanding child care. “We see an urgent need for action here”says generational city councilor Thomas Pamminger (ÖVP). “We therefore support the plans of St. Florian Abbey to build a new kindergarten in the rectory.”
