The right-wing conservative prime minister is being criticized in the EU because of the erosion of the rule of law and media freedom in Hungary under Orbán. Several EU infringement proceedings are ongoing against Hungary and sanctions have been imposed.

When asked by Reuters, BYD said that the search for a location was still ongoing and that a decision should be announced at the end of the year. There was initially no statement from the Hungarian government. In media reports, BYD was recently treated as a possible interested party for the Ford plant in Saarlouis, which is threatened with closure.
