Turkey joins the countries that call ambassadors in Tel Aviv for consultations due to the war in Gaza

The Government of Turkey decided to recall its ambassador to Israel, Sakir Ozkan Torunlar, for consultations due to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced today.

“Given the humanitarian tragedy that Gaza is suffering as Israel rejects calls for a ceasefire, continues attacks against civilians and does not allow the uninterrupted and constant entry of humanitarian aid, the decision was made to summon our ambassador in Tel Aviv, Sakir Ozkan Torunlar, to Ankara for consultations,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement replicated by the Sputnik news agency.

Torunlar was appointed Turkish ambassador to Israel in November 2022 following the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two states.

Previously, he served as ambassador to Palestine.

Turkey thus joins the governments of Colombia, Chile, Honduras and Jordan, which also called their ambassadors in Israel for consultations, in rejection of Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas of the last October 7th.

Bahrain and Bolivia went further and broke diplomatic relations with Israel.

In parallel, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will continue the tour that took him to Israel and Jordan in Turkey tomorrow, with a view to also addressing the war in the Middle East with Turkish authorities.

The news was announced by the State Department after the Turkish Government called its ambassador to Israel for consultations, in a statement replicated by the Europa Press news agency.

As in his previous meetings with other regional actors, Blinken plans to underline in Turkey “the importance of protecting civilians in Israel and the Gaza Strip” and the commitment so that the Gazan population can receive essential supplies and humanitarian aid and not be “forcedly displaced” from their homes.

The head of North American diplomacy is in favor of establishing “urgent mechanisms to stop the violence, calm the rhetoric, reduce regional tensions,” while calling to continue working for “a lasting and sustainable peace” in the Middle East that, according to Washington , goes through “the establishment of a Palestinian State.”

Israel launched a wave of bombings in Gaza after Hamas militants infiltrated its territory from there on October 7 and killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, in addition to kidnapping more than 240 people, including one twenty of Argentine nationality.

The attacks against the Strip, meanwhile, left nearly 9,500 dead, including more than 3,600 minors, according to the authorities of the enclave.

Since last weekend, Israeli troops have been carrying out a ground operation in Gaza.
